Washing, pre-washing & drying
The most important stage in cleaning a vehicle is the actual washing.
For greater efficiency, a pre-wash is recommended. This removes as many contaminants as possible from the bodywork and windows to reduce the risk of micro-scratches.

Prewash
Pre-washing precedes vehicle washing. It's usually done with a foam gun or lance. The foam will cling to the dirt and other contaminants, making them disappear when the car is rinsed. It's a step that's often overlooked, but one that can save you a lot of trouble in the long term: the appearance of scratches and other scuffs on the bodywork.
